Several months later, as the disease progressed, Pistorius went into a persistent vegetative state. Doctors had no idea what was wrong with Pistorius or what steps they could take to bring him out of his coma. Still, Pistorius’ parents were told that their son would never regain his mental capacity. Pistorius’ mother was informed that because of brain deterioration, Pistorius now had the intelligence level of a three-month old baby. Pistorius remained in the vegetative state for the next four years. Then, something deep inside Pistorius began to stir, helping him to regain partial consciousness.
